Will you paraphrase this sentence for me?

I do not understand the part I capitalized:

We learned early that gifts from mother were never what they appeared to be. A SMALL JEWELLERY BOX WITH THE PROMISE OF A DROP-DEAD DIAMOND ONCE HELD A FISHING FLY.

Thanks

  1. Nykki says:

A jewelry box that supposedly has a large diamond, that used to have a fly used for fishing.

(Fly would be bait at the end of the line.)

  2. ls1rks says:

It was a jewelery box that appeared to hold a diamond, but when you opened it, it contained a fish lure.

  3. Goddess of Grammar says:

With the promise of means that would seem to suggest (something good). Drop-dead here means amazing. A fishing fly is a lure used to catch fish.

One time mother gave me a small jewellery box which I hoped might contain a beautiful diamond, but inside was just a fishing fly.
