Where is the one that got away?

I was fishing in the weedy backwater of a lake yesterday when I got a big bite next to some lilypads. I began reeling in and got to see the head of a very big bass. Unfortunately, my line snapped and the fish got free just a few steps away from me.
I went for another pole and went back to the same spot and fished it for 2 hours with no other bites.

My question is: In a case like this does the fish go back to the area it was in when it took the bait or does it just fly off to another locale. Is it worth it to fish the same area in the hope of finding the fish again?
I was using a 7inch fake worm.

This happened @ Winchester lake in Ct.
**It was a bass

The fish will be in shock for about 2 hours and then it will forget the whole thing.

once i was fishing for cats at the gavins point talewaters on the missouri near yankton and i had 25lb test line on my pole and i got a giant bite then he took it and i didnt set the drag right and about 5 seconds later it broke the line

i regret not setting the drag all of my life

and then i fished there for a bout an hour and i didnt get a single bit so i think they move

That Bass is more than likely to feed in that area again, but it will not be biting for a while. After the trama it received from you hooking it, it was spooked and will hide out for a while until it relaxes. I would def fish that area again. Were you using bait or a lure? This matters because if it was a lure, depending on how and where it was hooked on the Bass, he may hold off eating until he can shake the lure off. This is could be hours or even days. If you were using live bait such as Herring or shiners I would GET MY LINE RIGHT BACK IN THE WATER. But being my guess is you used a lure, you may have to fish the spot at another time and hope noone else does it first :) By the way where was this? :)

Yes the fish will return to its original hole, but will stay down for awhile. How long it stays downs depends on the type of fish and other conditions. With trout I have gone back an hour or so later and caught the same fish, one even had the fly I lost him still in his mouth.

    Good luck Bill

yeah i caught the same bass twice in 1 1/2 hrs i know it was the same fish because i tagged it and put it back for a research project and i’m still catching some of the tagged fish so far i’ve caught 4 of the 20 i caught 1yr ago.

bass are always on the move, whether it is looking for food or looking for a place to spawn or mate. The only time they really stay in one place is during the spawn. The chances of catching that bass in the same spot are slim, but if it is a small lake, i guess it could be in that spot often. My point is that they are always on the move.

I’ve caught some nice bass out of that lake…….
how well did you set the hook? give it a little time to spit the hook out or fall out…..

there is no guarantee that he will be back but keep in mind the structure/weed-bed area and look for similar structure

Lol the exact same thing happened to me yesterday when a massive pickerel (probably 2 feet long and 4lbs) took my fake minnow and snapped my 10lb test. you can’t avoid getting line snapped sometimes its just a part of fishing. in a week or so you should be able to get to that spot cast out the same lure and hook him again. if you want to have the best chance to catch him now though use minnows at that same location. best of luck to you and I hope I catch the one who got away as well.
